Free Public Event Features Working Journalists and How We Gather and Report the News

In these days of political chaos and competing narratives, it can be difficult to discern the truth. This is where a trusted local news source like Ark Valley Voice (AVV) has a role to play. The date is purposeful: April 9 is also National Local News Day, highlighting the importance of journalists in defending democracy.

The event begins with the 47-minute documentary. This will be followed by informal table discussion with working journalists, who can answer questions about how they do their jobs, and end with a report out about key insights. If you are curious about how facts are checked, why transparency in government is important, and the media’s role not just in holding elected officials to account, but in framing the issues, this is the time to ask.

Students in Senior Seminar, or civics classes are especially encouraged to attend.

Event co-sponsors are AVV’s parent nonprofit, Truth Has a Voice Foundation, and the League of Women Voters of Chaffee County. For more information, click here. Ark Valley Voice has invited a representative of each of the local community news organizations to join in the event, and share in the table discussions about their roles as journalists, and the importance of a free press to a free country. RSVP to arkvalleyvoice@gmail.com with your name and the number of attendees.
