Free Press Free Country

Free Public Event Features Working Journalists and How We Gather and Report the News

In these days of political chaos and competing narratives, it can be difficult to discern the truth. This is where a trusted local news source like Ark Valley Voice (AVV) has a role to play. The date is purposeful: April 9 is also National Local News Day, highlighting the importance of journalists in defending democracy.

The event begins with the 47-minute documentary. This will be followed by informal table discussion with working journalists, who can answer questions about how they do their jobs, and end with a report out about key insights. If you are curious about how facts are checked, why transparency in government is important, and the media’s role not just in holding elected officials to account, but in framing the issues, this is the time to ask.

Students in Senior Seminar, or civics classes are especially encouraged to attend.

Event co-sponsors are AVV’s parent nonprofit, Truth Has a Voice Foundation, and the League of Women Voters of Chaffee County. For more information, click here. Ark Valley Voice has invited a representative of each of the local community news organizations to join in the event, and share in the table discussions about their roles as journalists, and the importance of a free press to a free country. RSVP to arkvalleyvoice@gmail.com with your name and the number of attendees.

Salida Theater Project Presents: Clue

April 9-12

Showtime:

Thurs - Sat 7:00PM

Sunday Matinee 2:00PM

SteamPlant Theater

Salida Theater Project is bringing more than a murder mystery to the stage this April -- we’re bringing one to the entire town of Salida.

When Clue opens at the Salida SteamPlant on April 9th, audiences will enjoy the fast-paced comedy and iconic characters made famous by the board game and 1985 film. But before the curtain rises, the mystery begins on our streets.

Starting March 27, STP launches the Clue–Salida Mystery Challenge, inviting the community to test how well they know local businesses. Participants will solve riddles posted at www.salidatheaterproject.com to identify six participating locations around town. If they think they’ve solved one, they’ll stop in and ask the magic question: “Are you a Clue site?” They’ll scan the QR code to get a letter. When they've gathered the letters to spell the mystery clue, they'll submit their answer at one of the performances for a chance to win prizes.

The challenge runs through April 12 and encourages both locals and visitors to explore Salida in a new way. Theatergoers can also join the fun by dressing up for a Clue-themed costume contest during the show’s run, with prizes awarded after each performance.

Clue runs April 9, 10, 11 and 12 at the Salida SteamPlant. Tickets and details are available at www.salidatheaterproject.com.

The Noteables: Circles of Life

The Noteables: Circles of Life

The local women’s community chorus, The Noteables, will present their spring concert, Circles of Life,on Sunday, May 3 at 3:00pm

Under the animated direction of Linda Taylor, the chorus will perform a wide variety of songs that encourage us to embrace the unknown, inspire us to explore new circles of life and remind us that we are all in this together.

The program includes spring ballads, Broadway, Nature’s stories, humorous selections and songs about crossing new bridges, while laughing at the absurdities of life.

The Noteables will welcome in the spring season with the Gershwin tune, They All Laughed, followed by Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time. The contemplative, Begin Again encourages us to get Closer to the Flame which makes Crossing a Bridge, from Anastasia, less frightening. Take a road trip with us, leave Colorado and jump into the circle of New York, New York. The hilarious A is For Alto sets us straight as to who is really running the show. Plus, many more.

The Noteables are proud to present Men of Note, a new and exciting local men's a cappella quintet, directed by Dave Small. Their debut will include Over the Rainbow, Shambala, Oh, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbisonand James Taylor’s Shower the People.

The show will also feature Oso Blanco on drums, Kathleen Chiras on electric bass and flautist, Brenda Covert.

Music is healing and brings perfect strangers together in laughter, joy and harmony, something that The Noteables are famous for! Join us during these difficult times for a concert series that will lighten your heart and lead you to new circles of life.

Suggested donation is $20 to help pay for the cost of music and publicity. For more information, call Linda Taylor, 719 539-2428. Tax deductible contributions are appreciated. Visit www.salidasings.org

What the River Knows

Looby doors open: 5:15 pm

Showtime: 6 pm

Glen Canyon Institute, in collaboration with Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association, presents What the River Knows, a Good Intentions Paving Co. documentary exploring the reemergence of Glen Canyon from the receding waters of Lake Powell reservoir. As the West faces the urgent need to redesign water management, we are offered the chance to restore one of the planet’s most stunning landscapes. What the River Knows explores this unique reflection point in a centuries-long history, weaving together past and present to reveal a new way forward for the Colorado River.

The evening will open with Glen Canyon Rising, a documentary short from Crow Canyon Archaeological Center featuring Hopi archaeologist Lyle Balenquah and author Craig Childs. This powerful visual and narrative experience reveals layers of human history embedded in the landscape. As water levels fall, generations of cultural footprints are revealed, and dormant ecological systems begin to stir once more.

Following the films, the event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring:

- Laura Brown (Crow Canyon, Outreach & Production Coordinator)

- Davide Ippolito (Returning Rapids Project, River Guide)

- Anna Penner (Glen Canyon Institute, Projects and Development Manager)

Audience Q+A to follow.

Central Colorado Conservancy 2026 winter film night

The American Southwest is a family-friendly documentary that follows two intertwined storylines: the journey of the Colorado River from its headwaters to the sea, and the evolving human relationship with the river and its wildlife over thousands of years. The film highlights spectacular ecological events while exploring society’s impact on water and the natural world, emphasizing both the capacity to degrade and the power to restore it. Unlike typical wildlife films, it blends nature storytelling with social and environmental realities, confronting water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and the challenges of a warming, drying Southwest.
